This ihram belt would have been worn by a male pilgrim, and used for carrying valuables while performing the Hajj rites. The ihram garment for men consists of two pieces of unstitched white cloth. One cloth (the rida’) is worn around the upper body while the other (the izar) would be worn wrapped around the lower body. This belt would have been worn around the waist on top of the izar. The inscription upon the belt wishes the wearer good health.
As well as referring to ritual clothing, ihram also donates a state of mind in which a Muslim must enter in order to embark on Hajj. During this period, pilgrims must adhere to certain rules, for instance men and women are both forbidden from killing animals, uprooting trees, or cutting their nails or hair.
