Reverse-glass painting, with a general view of Medina on Legacy-collections Sphere from
Made by applying paint to glass and then viewing the image from the other side, reverse glass paintings are otherwise known verre églomisé and religious themes in this technique were popular in places such as India and Syria.
This view of Medina may have been made in Turkey, India or possibly the Hijaz, and shows a view of the characteristic green dome and minaret of the Prophet’s mosque and the city behind. It may have been copied from a photograph and appears to be from the elevated vantage point, on the opposite side of the mosque courtyard.
