The sa‘y between Safa and Marwa on Collections Sphere from Khalili Collections
The first Saudi expansion of the haram began in the reign of King ‘Abdul Aziz and was carried out extensively by Saud bin ‘Abdul Aziz Al Saud and lasted until 1973. Along the mas‘a (the corridor between the hills of Safa and Marwa) the smoking of pipes was prohibited, and the all the residential and commercial buildings were demolished. An upper floor was created and a high wall was built around the area. A central barrier was created in order to split the flow of pilgrims.
