Sitarah for the door of the Ka‘bah ordered by Sultan Ahmad I on Collections Sphere from
In her study of the Ka‘bah door curtains in the Topkapi Saray Museum, Hulya Tezcan has identified four main styles. The earliest is that of a curtain bearing the name of Sultan Süleyman the Magnificent and the date AH 950 / AD 1543–4. The second style, to which this curtain belongs, apepars to have been popular for a long period, as known examples date from the late 16th to the late 18th century.
Characteristic features of this style include the five arches at the top, as well as the zigzag panels and the reciprocal ogival cartouches at the bottom. The commisioning order and date are in the two panels immediately above the latter. This curtain was commisioned and presented to the Ka‘bah by Sultan Ahmed I.
