The Egyptian mahmal, with the name of King Fu‘ad I; by Riyad Chihata on Collections Sphere from
Egypt had sent the Mahmal since the thirteenth century but during the reign of King Fu‘ad I, its presence was objected to by Hussein bin Ali Al-Hashimi the Sharif and Emir of Mecca. The mahmal continued to accompany the caravan of pilgrims from Egypt to the Hijaz until 1926, when an incident at Mina related to the mahmal and the musicians who accompanied it resulted in bloodshed. This was the last time the mahmal travelled to Saudi Arabia. However, it continued to be paraded in Cairo until 1952.
