Dumas was born in Italy and was a banker before taking up photography. He had photographic studios in both Beirut and Istanbul and named himself ‘Photographer to the Imperial and Royal Court of Prussia’. In the mid 1870s he worked as a photographer for the American Palestine Exploration Society and his views are well known.
